Montclair RFC wins division 10-27-07 http://www.montclairtimes.com/page.php?page=16119
The Montclair Rugby Football Club capped a perfect 7-0 league season with a 41-3 home victory over the Gotham Knights RFC this past Saturday. The win qualifies the Norsemen for the Northeast Regional playoffs in the spring and promotion to the Metropolitan NY Second Division next autumn.
Casey Mizzone started the scoring for Montclair with a try eight minutes into the game. Mike Shansky converted the kick to begin a perfect day with the boot.
Strong Norsemen defense then caused a Gotham turnover, quickly turned into a try by Ryan Van Note. Scrum half Jamison Tomeo pushed the halftime score to 24-3 when he skied over the line for a close-range try.
The key to Montclair’s defensive success and scoring in the second half was the strong lineout play of Stefan Semeniuk, who stole numerous Gotham throws.
Gotham’s defense began to tire late in the game and fullback Eugene Maina took advantage to strike for a 70-meter try.
Shansky ended the scoring by outrunning the Knight defenders to a long Maina kick, then Shansky chipped ahead to recover his own kick for the try.
The B-side completed the Montclair sweep on the day with a 38-0 victory over their Gotham counterparts. Joe Cassese started the scoring for Montclair with his first try for the club.
Peter Driscoll then added two similar tries by breaking tackles and outrunning the Knight defense. Ben Stewart, Peter Del Vecchio and Pat Gourley all added second-half tries.
Jason Potterson capped the Norsemen scoring with his own try and four conversions.
Montclair RFC advances to division finals 10-20-07

The Montclair Rugby Football Club advanced to the Met NY Union Division III finals with a 36-17 win over Danbury RFC this past Saturday. The Norsemen’s home victory puts the club in position to meet its season-long goal of gaining promotion back to the league’s second division. The Gotham Knights will be Montclair’s opponent in the final, scheduled for 1 p.m. on Saturday at Brookdale Park.
Casey Mizzone scored the locals’ first try against Danbury in the opening 10 minutes. Ryan Van Note then added another try after slicing through the Danbury defense from 30 meters out. Both tries were converted by Mike Shansky to help give Montclair a 14-5 halftime lead.
Mike Arthur rumbled down the sidelines while breaking several tackles to open the second-half scoring for Montclair. Eugene Maina added a long-distance try after recovering his own kick-ahead, sprinting past the Danbury defense. Mike Driscoll’s subsequent conversion increased the lead. Later, Driscoll added a penalty kick.
Driscoll iced the win in the final minutes after recovering a Danbury kick that was blocked by Van Note near the Danbury goalpost. Montclair’s forwards helped pace the victory by playing strong defense while forcing numerous turnovers.
The forwards added excellent lineout play, as Rich Farrell connected with his jumpers, Rich Suchanski and Stefan Semeniuk, throughout the contest.
Montclair’s B-side lost a hard-fought 19-7 decision. Peter Driscoll scored the lone try for the Norsemen. Julio Gamboa kicked the conversion.

Not much you can say. NYA is having numbers problems and came to the game needing a couple of players. Montclair graciously gave them whatthey needed soa game could be played. The first half saw Montclair score 8 tries playing open attacking rugby. Inthe second half open subbing for both sides was allowed and the match was more competitive with Montclair adding 4 more tries to NYA's one.
Though it would have been easy for teams to get frustrated and start taking shots, both sides played hard clean rugby and were a pleasure to work with
Montclair Rugby Club Wins Opener 9-9-07
The Montclair Men's Rugby Football Club opened its league season with a
hard-fought 43-19 road victory over North Jersey RFC. The Norseman
jumped out to a big early lead by scoring 4 tries in the first 20
minutes. A balanced attack saw Montclair's forwards and backs linking
well to exploit the North Jersey defense. North Jersey fought back for
two late tries to cut the halftime deficit to 31-14.
Aleks Miletic quickly opened the second half scoring for Montclair by
touching down for his first senior-side try. Both sides added one more
try each in the second-half as the hot & humid conditions effected play.
Peter Del Vecchio & Mike Arthur led Montclair with two tries each from
their Wing positions. While, Montclair natives Ryan Van Note & Mike
Mellody each added a try & Mike Driscoll kicked 4 conversions to cap the
scoring.
Montclair RFC posts 2-1 record at CAN-AM Tournament

The Montclair Men’s Rugby Football Club had a strong showing at the CAN-AM Rugby Tournament in Lake Placid, N.Y., this past weekend. The Norsemen started the day with a 10-5 upset of Division I stalwart New York RFC. Sebastian Campos scored the winning try on his own after faking out the New York defense with a dummy pass that left an open lane to the try zone. Montclair withstood a desperate comeback attempt by the New Yorkers, as several crunching tackles from Evan Jacobs anchored its strong defense.
Montclair was victorious again in its second match, a 33-17 win over the Penn State Alumni II. Peter Delvecchio led the scoring with two tries from his wing position, helping as Montclair pulled away after a close first half.
The Norsemen finally ran out of steam in their third match, losing to a tough Buffalo RFC squad, 25-5. Peter Driscoll, a former Essex County High School player, scored the lone try for Montclair on a great individual effort. The Essex County squad is a developmental team run by Montclair RFC.
Montclair Rugby Club Beats Rockaway 4-6-07
The Montclair Men’s Rugby Football Club stormed back from a 17-3 halftime deficit to defeat Rockaway RFC by a 21-17 margin on Saturday. Remi Ketels scored his first try for the club to start the second half comeback. Martin Regincos set up the next score by breaking several tackles and then unloading to Sebastian Campos for the try. With 7 minutes to play, Montclair finally took an 18-17 lead after Mike Driscoll bulled over for a try which was converted by Mike Shansky. Campos added a drop-goal and Montclair held off a furious Rockaway comeback attempt to complete a second half shutout and seal the victory.
The future of the club was on display in the B-side game as a young team topped Rockaway by a 19-7 score. College students Peter Driscoll and Alex Alberet scored for Montclair. While, Essex County High School team captain Nate Van Orden added a try during the victory.
